The shooter initially fled the scene on an e-scooter

Swedish police have apprehended a 16-year-old suspect following a shooting in which three people were killed in the city of Uppsala on Tuesday.

Police swooped onto the scene after members of the public reported that they heard loud bangs that sounded like gunfire close to Vaksala Square in the centre of Uppsala, a university city 44 miles north of Stockholm.

The shooter fled the scene on an e-scooter and was on the run before being caught by officers.

A police helicopter was part of the search operation, police spokesman Magnus Jansson Klarin told TV4.

The identities of the victims and the shooter have yet to be released.

Photos of the scene showed police outside a barber shop called "Shalom" and a large area was cordoned off as the investigation was launched.

The Swedish Transport Administration said that train traffic was stopped due to the police operation in the area between 5pm and 6pm local time.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer said that a "brutal act of violence" has taken place.

"Everything happened so fast. It just went bang, bang, bang," a witness told the Swedish channel.

Local resident Nina said she felt "uncomfortable" because the attack happened near where she lives in a neighbourhood where children play regularly.

"I find it uncomfortable, because I mean especially when, you know, we drive past this one. I picked up my partner just before we drove past here. We live next door and I think there are children and young people in these areas. I find it very uncomfortable," Nina told EuroNews.

A potential motive has yet to be established.

Rickard AnderssonSwedish media identified the attacker as Rickard Andersson, 35, who carried out the attack at an adult education centre on Tuesday

Earlier this year, ten people were killed at a school in Sweden "with an automatic weapon" in a horrific attack in Orebro, southern Sweden.

Rickard Andersson, the perpetrator, was also killed in the attack.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the shooting at Risbergska school in Orebro, 200km (124 miles) west of the capital city Stockholm, as the "worst mass shooting in Swedish history".
