A shocking Google Street View image showing someone loading what appears to be a body bag into a car boot has led to the arrest of two people in northern Spain.

The gruesome discovery was made in the small village of Tajueco, where police say a man and woman have been detained in connection with the death of a Cuban national.

Part of the victim's dismembered remains were found buried in a cemetery last week, following the arrests made last month.

The Google Street View photograph captured the precise moment when a man was allegedly disposing of the body.

Police have arrested the victim's Cuban ex-wife and her current partner after remains were discovered in October 2023.

The victim has been identified as Jorge Luis Perez, a 32-year-old Cuban national, who went missing late last year.

Officers discovered the torso of Perez in a cemetery in the area, though the rest of his remains have not yet been found.

According to Spanish newspaper El Pais, the male suspect lives just a few miles from the village of Tajueco, where the Google Street View image was captured.

Both suspects have been remanded in custody as the murder investigation continues.

The Google Street View car's visit to Tajueco was a rare occurrence, being the first time in 15 years that the mapping vehicle had travelled through the remote Spanish village.

"Nothing ever happens" in Tajueco, according to El Pais, which added: "And if something did happen, surely nobody would know about it - or so the alleged murderer must have thought when he put a bundle in the boot of his old burgundy Rover last October."

The man was seemingly caught off guard when the Google Maps car drove by - just as he was "bending down to put the bundle in the boot, with no neighbours or onlookers near by", the outlet reported.

Officials also noted another photo sequence showing a blurred figure moving a large white bundle in a wheelbarrow.

Google has since removed that sequence from Street View.

The investigation began when a relative reported Perez missing after receiving suspicious text messages from the victim's phone.

The messages claimed Perez had met a woman, was planning to leave Spain, and would be getting rid of his phone.

Police made the arrests on November 12 this year, taking both suspects into custody.

While the Google Street View images provided an important lead, police have stated they were not "decisive" in solving the case.

The discovery of the severely decomposed torso earlier this month marked a breakthrough, though the search continues for the remaining body parts.

The accused remain in custody as investigators work to piece together the full circumstances of the crime.
