The Spanish airport was closed as flights were diverted to other destinations, including Majorca

Ibiza Airport has been closed because of a bomb alert after a man was removed from a Ryanair flight heading to Milan.

A false alarm led to normal operations being suspended for nearly an hour earlier this afternoon.

Some flights were diverted to separate destinations, including Palma Airport in Majorca.

The chaos comes as British holidaymakers continue to jet off to a number of locations, with Spain ranking as the UK's top tourist destination.

Police have reportedly arrested a man on a Ryanair flight heading to Milan Bergamo Airport.

He supposedly claimed he was carrying a bomb as the plane was about to take off.

No landings or take-offs occurred for nearly an hour after the alarm was sounded just after 3.30pm.

Flight operations were also suspended from around 3.45pm to 4.30pm.

A spokesman for Spanish airport operator Aena said: “There has been a security incident on a plane at Ibiza Airport and the Civil Guard has taken charge of the situation.

“Normal flight operations at the airport were suspended for around 45 minutes.”

The spokesman also stressed that it is not yet known how many flights were affected.

However, the incident is thought to have subsequently impacted other outgoing flights.

The incident comes after a storm caused chaos in Majorca earlier this month.

Adverse conditions caused the suspension of flights for around two hours during a downpour.

Parts of the terminal were flooded, leaving many holidaymakers stranded.

A pilot was also filmed aborting his landing at the last minute after facing “zero visibility” during his approach to the airport.
