Russia holds biggest navy drills with China in over 30 years as Putin's planes spotted over Nato waters

Russian military aircraft were spotted near Nato waters on Wednesday as Putin launches huge naval and air drills including China in joint manoeuvres.
US fighter jets conducted an intercept when two Russian military aircrafts were detected near Alaska.
The Russian aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace.
It comes as Russia began their "Ocean-24" exercise earlier this week.

In a statement, the Russian Defence Ministry said that 400 warships, submarines and support vessels, more than 120 planes and helicopters and over 90,000 troops are involved in the operation.
Officials say the exercise will continue until September 16.

President Vladimir Putin told military chiefs that the war games are the largest of their kind in three decades.
The Russian leader also informed officials that China will be involved with warships and planes.
He said that 15 countries have been invited to observe the drills.
Putin said: "We pay special attention to strengthening military cooperation with friendly states. Today, in the context of growing geopolitical tensions in the world, this is especially important."

The Russian president accused the US of 'trying to maintain its global military and political dominance at any cost'

The president also accused the US of "trying to maintain its global military and political dominance at any cost," seeking "to inflict a strategic defeat" on Russia in its war and to "break the established security architecture and balance of power in the Asia-Pacific region".
He added: "Under the pretext of countering the allegedly existing Russian threat and containing the People’s Republic of China, the United States and its satellites are increasing their military presence near Russia’s western borders, in the Arctic and in the Asia-Pacific region.
"Russia must be prepared for any development of the situation."
