Russian forces are 'totally depleted' by the ongoing war, a Ukranian official has said
Russia has lost more than 1,000 soldiers and 30 tanks in a single day of fighting in Ukraine, according to new figures.
Putin’s forces are “totally depleted” by the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has resulted in the loss of 322,900 Russian fighters since Moscow invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
Russia has also lost 5,496 tanks and 7,833 artillery systems, according to figures released by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The Russian forces are allegedly using older style artillery after using up its modern arsenal.
Ivan Stupak, a former Ukrainian Security Service officer, said: “It's really a big problem for the Russians. It's not just a cliché, it's not Ukrainian propaganda.
“For the last five months or so, Russia has very actively been using old-style artillery.
“Not late-Soviet era, but mid-50s and mid-60s—D30 and the D20-type of towed artillery, with a maximum range of around 9 to 11 miles.”
Stupak said that Russia’s reliance on older machinery shows that Putin has run out of artillery.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:
“Russian artillery stockpiles are totally depleted,” he said to Newsweek.
“They are using this artillery because they have no other options.”
Despite the latest blow to Russian forces and artillery, Putin has ramped up its offensive efforts in Ukraine, launching their largest drone strike on the country since the war began.
Overnight, more than 70 drones were fired at Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said.
At least five people were wounded, as the drones targeted different districts in Kyiv.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the attack on the capital an act of “wilful terror”, writing Telegram app that "the Russian leadership is proud of the fact that it can kill".
Last week, a joint investigation by the BBC and independent Russian news outlet Mediazona identified the names of 37,052 Russian military personnel who have died since the war began.
It said the actual number of losses was higher than the figures provided.

ReutersKyiv has not disclosed their death toll, stating that revealing the number could harm its war effort.
However, last week, a Ukrainian civic group said it has confirmed the deaths of nearly 25,000 Ukrainian soldiers since Russia's February 2022 invasion.
The real figure was likely higher, they added, noting that many of the 15,000 troops listed as missing were likely dead.
In April, a leaked US Defence Intelligence Agency assessment estimated that 15,500 to 17,500 Ukrainians had lost their lives.
The assessment also calculated that Kyiv had suffered 124,500 to 131,000 casualties.
