Raids are being carried out in Crimea in a bid to find those responsible for the attack

Vladimir Putin is thought to be "completely furious" at the sinking of one of Russia's major warships in a Boxing Day attack by Ukraine.

The President has even ordered commanders to the front line as punishment for failing to stop the assault.

Ukrainian partisan group Atesh said: "Putin is completely furious over the destruction of the Novocherkassk large landing ship.

"An order was issued to punish the Crimean air defence forces.

"It is expected that many commanders will be removed and sent to the front to participate in assault groups.”

In the early hours of December 26, Ukraine used air-launched missiles to attack the Crimean port of Feodosia, damaging the Novocherkassk landing ship.

The ship is often used to carry tanks, armoured vehicles and troops ashore.

Ukraine said the extensive damage caused by the explosion meant that it was unlikely the vessel was in any fit state to be deployed again.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu personally briefed President Vladimir Putin in detail about the attack, the Kremlin said.

Ukraine had used cruise missiles in the attack, without specifying what kind, Ihnat said. Both Britain and France have supplied Kyiv with such missiles.

Russia has hinted it may try to seize more Ukrainian territory along the Black Sea coast, but the loss of Novocherkassk makes it far less likely.

Putin earlier this month said that Odessa, the headquarters of Ukraine's own navy, was "a Russian city."

Following the attack he has now ordered raids in Crimea to try and find the resistance fighters responsible for destroying the warship.

"The flywheel of repression is spinning," Atesh said.

"Local residents have been raided throughout the city, their smartphones are being taken away and their houses are being searched."
