A 74-year-old Christian man was allegedly killed by an angry mob in Pakistan after being accused of burning pages of the Quran.

Nazir Masih is believed to have died of his injuries after being beaten and stoned outside his home in Sargodha, Punjab on May 25.


The pensioner's family deny accusations he destroyed the Muslim Holy Book and alleges that he was punched, kicked, and stoned.

His shoe factory was also reportedly set on fire with family members inside - 12 of which survived the blaze.

According to reports, Masih and his son were badly beaten before police arrived and the 74-year-old was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

More than 200 families have fled the neighbourhood following the attack, UCA News reports.

Many of those fleeing are said to be catholics.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

On Monday, it was reported that Masih had died of his injuries.

One hundred arrests have been made by Pakistani police following the horror attack.

Cases against more than 400 suspects under Pakistani anti-terror laws have also been filed.

The independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said the lives of the Christian community were "at grave risk at the hands of the charged mobs".

Despite blasphemy being punishable by death in Pakistan, nobody has been executed by the state for it.

Laws are said to be abused to settle scores.

The Catholic Bishops Conference’s National Commission for Justice and Peace has urged officials to ensure the safety of Christians in Punjab.
