Witnesses told Myanmar Now that parts of the historic Mandalay Palace were severely damaged in the quake.

A bridge in Sagaing Township was completely destroyed, according to reports.

The area is already severely affected by ongoing civil conflict between resistance groups and junta forces.

Myanmar is situated along the Sagaing Fault, a major geological fault line that runs through several regions, including Mandalay.

This fault has a history of significant seismic activity, making areas along its path particularly susceptible to earthquakes.

Myanmar has been grappling with over four years of civil war, triggered by a military coup.

The conflict has left the country, one of Asia's poorest, lacking resources to effectively handle major natural disasters.

In Bangkok, the earthquake caused significant damage, with videos on social media showing high-rise buildings collapsing.

A 30-storey skyscraper under construction for government offices collapsed, trapping 43 workers, according to police and medics.

Emergency services were seen responding to the earthquake and treating people in the streets.
