One Middle East analyst with security firm Sibylline told GB News that the motive for the self-immolation was unknown.

“There have not been any official statements on this individual’s motivation,” the analyst told GB News.

“Social media sources are divided– some have cited opposition to Jordan’s ties with Israel, others have cited the increasing cost of living.

“There is also a realistic possibility that this was a personal matter that is unrelated to political considerations.”

The incident comes after a 25-year-old self-immolated outside the Embassy of Israel in Washington DC, in protest against what he described as a “genocide” in Gaza.

Jordan has a significant ethnically Palestinian population and there have been regular protests regarding the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in the normally peaceful country.

Jordan is a close ally of Britain and the United States in the region and has supported both nations with aid drops into Gaza.

King Abdullah II has directly overseen some of these airdrops.
