Thousands of Palestinians have been taking refuge in hospitals amid Israel’s bombardment of the enclave.
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) is investigating what happened at the hospital.
The strike came ahead of Joe Biden’s arrival in Israel as he bids to show solidarity with the country.
The director-general of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: “[The] WHO strongly condemns the attack on Al Ahli Arab Hospital in north Gaza. Early reports indicate hundreds of deaths and injuries. We call for the immediate protection of civilians and health care.”
Palestinian officials have reported dozens of deaths from airstrikes in the southern towns of Rafah and Khan Younis as the Gaza Strip continues to undergo heavy bombardment from Israel.
Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have fled to the south after Israel ordered them to leave the north.
The Israeli military says their attacks are being carried out in a bid to flush out Hamas militants, accusing them of hiding around hospitals and schools by using “human shields”.
Hamas’s terror attack on Israel on October 7 killed more than 1,400 Israelis, according to Israeli officials, and prompted all out warfare.
