The German man is currently in a coma so is not able to give additional information

A man was found with his genitals missing after his pet dog had “bitten his penis off and eaten it”, German police have revealed.

Officers were alerted to a potential incident on Magdeburger Straß, Herne, when concerned neighbours rang the authorities to alert them to incessant barking coming from a nearby property.

They arrived at the single-family home at around 2am when they heard groans coming from inside the building.

Breaking down the door, the police discovered a 66-year-old man and his dog, who was described as “about the size of a Jack Russel” inside.

The man was in critical condition and was quickly rushed to hospital, state public broadcaster WDR reported.

The “instrument of the crime”, or the man’s penis, has not been recovered from the scene.

He has been placed in an artificial coma by doctors, so is unable to give any further details on what happened.

“We hope we can interview him soon,’ First Police Chief Inspector Frank Lemanis told the German tabloid Bild.

“One hypothesis, of course, is that the dog, which is about the size of a Jack Russell terrier, bit off the penis and ate it. The wound could also be a bite wound.

“But it’s also possible a sex accident or a crime.”

Officers are going public with the case in order to appeal for witnesses.

Charges of grievous bodily harm are being considered.

A murder squad has reportedly picked up the case to “clear up the crime, which has so far been completely open”.

If Lemanis’ hypothesis is correct, it would not be the first time such an incident has occurred in Germany.

In 2012, a 61-year-old man had his genitals bitten off by a dog and had to be rushed to hospital.

Whilst the man’s genitals were saved by surgeons, the canine and its owner were never found.
