Surging support for the AFD is putting pressure on Berlin to take action to deal with the migrant crisis

Germany has announced a major immigration crackdown due to its “continuing burden” and the threat of “Islamist terrorism”.

Nancy Faeser, who serves as Olaf Scholz's Interior Minister, accepted Berlin must enforce proper border controls as support for the AFD threatens Germany's established parties.

The new rules will see “harsh rejections of migrants at the borders”, German tabloid The Bild has claimed.

Faeser reportedly informed the EU Commission of the decision in a move which appeared to mark a rapid turnaround after she last month refused to extend strict controls.

This policy has already seen more than 30,000 people turned back at the borders since mid-October last year amid concerns over the rise in first-time asylum requests.

The decision to extend the policy came after an “emergency meeting” between the centre-right CDU/CSU alliance and regional representatives.

However, Austria is far from happy with Germany’s decision and even claimed it will not accept migrants turned away at the border.

“There's no room for manoeuvre there,” Austria's Foreign Minister Gerhard Karner told Bild.

“It's the law. I have directed the Head of the federal police to not allow any returns,” he added.

Manuel Ostermann, deputy federal chairman of the Federal Police Union, recently lambasted the EU’s Schengen Zone as putting additional strain on Germany.

He said: “The crisis in Germany's security is a direct consequence of Schengen's ineffective policies.

“Schengen's inability to manage migration effectively has put Germany's safety at stake.

“Germany must realize the current failure of Schengen and either make a concerted effort to return to the current legal situation or terminate Schengen.”

Ostermann added: “Schengen has failed to protect Germany from the influx of criminals, necessitating immediate action.

“We must continue to notify our internal borders because border controls, whose effectiveness has been proven, are no longer maintained under Schengen.

“The failure of Schengen is evident in the increased crime rates, making it clear that changes are needed.”

Concern about immigration is propelling support for the populist AFD as the Eurosceptic party scored a victory in Thuringia’s regional election earlier this month.
