Over a dozen people are missing after a tourist boat sank off the coast of Egypt

The boat, named Sea Story was carrying 31 tourists of various nationalities and 14 crew members.

Among them were four Britons and two Americans.

Authorities have said 28 people have been rescued but 17 others are missing.

A stress signal was received at 5:30am local time from the ship which left port on Saturday for a diving trip.

It was reported that the diving trip departed from Porto Ghalib Port in Marsa Alam and was supposed to return to the Hurghada port.

The survivors were found in the Wadi el-Gemal area south of Marsa Alam and rescued via helicopter.

They are reportedly receiving the necessary medical care.

Major Maj-Gen Amr Hanafi of The Red Sea Governorate said the Egyptian Navy warship El Fateh and military aircraft were increasing efforts to locating the missing passengers.

The Sea Story is 144ft and was built in 202 and can carry up to 32 passengers.

It is not yet clear what caused the vessel to sink.

It is reported that other passengers on board included citizens from Norway, Finland, Ireland, China, Spain, Belgium, Egypt and Switzerland.
