Former European Council president returns to the forefront of politics

FORMER European Council president, Donald Tusk is on track to secure power in Poland.

In parliamentary elections billed the most important for a generation, the pro-European leader claimed victory for the opposition ending eight years of nationalist rule.

The vote marks a massive turnaround for Warsaw, which has feuded with the European Union over the rule of law, media freedom, migration and LGBT rights since PiS came to power in 2015.

With war raging in neighbouring Ukraine and a migrant crisis brewing, Brussels and Washington have been watching the vote closely.

Official results after 95 per cent of voting was counted showed PiS had won 37 per cent of the vote, Civic Platform was at 29.1 per cent and coaltion allies at 22.8%.

KO leader Donald Tusk, 66, vowed to mend Warsaw's relations with Brussels, undo PiS reforms and hold its leaders to account.

"Democracy has won. This is the end of the PiS government, this is the end of bad times," a jubilant Tusk told party members.

The EU has seen the election as the most significant in redefining EU power across eastern Europe.
