A dog owner was left surprised after his online purchase, which he thought was a Golden retriever dog, turned out to be a very different animal.

Liu, from Liuzhou in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China, purchased what he believed was a Golden retriever.

However, when the package arrived he was stunned to find a Chinese domestic dog which is referred to as a "meat dog" in the region.

Liu reportedly bought the dog on August 4 for a total cost of £21 (200 yuan).

The Tuguo - which is a delicacy in China - is used for festivals dedicated to eating dog meat.

They were first adapted as domestic dogs by the Han dynasty of China and work well as hunting dogs.

But despite Liu's new pet being a popular dish, he wasn't disappointed with the error.

Liu said the mix up stemmed from the Tuguo's name being "Golden Retriever".

But rather than returning the dog, he has decided to keep the Tuguo as a pet.

This June saw footage being shared of the Yulin Dog Meat Festival where chefs were spotted preparing for the controversial event where thousands of dogs will be consumed.

The event received backlash from the NoToDogMeat charity which arrived in Yulin, South East China, to document the horror and rescue as many dogs as possible.

Videos showed shops laying out dog corpses on the counters ahead of the June 21 Summer Solstice event.

The dogs, which had been rounded up from nearby villages were transported to the festival and consumed for a period of 10 days.

Sheena Gao a board member of the Animals Hope and Wellness Foundation told the Daily Mail: "The dogs are torched, clubbed, boiled alive, skinned alive. It's absolutely horrific.

"The dogs and cats in these trucks go for days without food or water and when they arrive they are extremely sick or injured. Our ultimate goal is to put an end to the horrific Yulin Dog Meat Festival."
