“Barack Obama, who could not get Kamala Harris over the finish line. Barack Obama who gave America Donald Trump in his first term.
“Michelle Obama now has this podcast which is flopping hard. She’s leaning into these [divorce] rumours - which she has not denied.
“She has said ‘people are mistaking my need for independence’. If you’re not getting a divorce, why not say that rather than leave all these bread crumbs?”
Questions have been raised in recent months with the former First Lady not accompanying her husband to several high-profile events.
She was not present at Donald Trump’s inauguration or the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter.
Without mentioning these occasions, Obama told the Work in Progress podcast hosted by actress Sophia Bush that she was “making a decision” for herself and had to put up with people “assuming that my husband and I are divorcing”.
She admitted to feeling some guilt for stepping back.
“That’s the thing that we as women, I think we struggling with disappointing people”, she said.
"I mean, so much so that this year people couldn't even fathom that I was making a choice for myself that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.
"This couldn't be a grown woman just making a set of decisions for herself, right? But that's what society does to us."
Michelle also said in the podcast: "I chose to do what was best for me. Not what I had to do. Not what I thought other people wanted me to do."
