A 100-year-old World War Two veteran has revealed that his lifelong dream of flying in a spitfire may be coming true soon.

John King joined the Royal Navy in 1943 during the Second World War and is one of the remaining veterans to have received support from the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans.

The charity organises various trips for veterans throughout the year, including visits to commemoration events abroad.

Johnny Gallagher from the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans announced this year's fundraising initiative during an appearance on GB News earlier this month.

The campaign will support veterans in attending next month's VE Day celebrations, but also aims to fulfil personal dreams of former servicemen and women.

"I created the charity for these veterans while they're here with us to live out their dreams," Gallagher told GB News.

One such dream belongs to the Royal Navy veteran who has always hoped to fly in a Spitfire aircraft.

He told GB News: "He's going to take me on a spitfire. I'm not going to fly."

When asked why he wants to fly in the plane, he explained: “Because it won the Battle of Britain, of course. I think I had just turned 16. I was trying to work it out.

“We used to see the Battle of Britain happening, and living in Dagenham, which is just outside of London, we could stand out there, being young and stupid, watching them.”

Andrew said: "Do you think you'll get him in a spitfire?"

Gallagher said: "We will. Now he knows. The thing is, it's not just John.

"There's many veterans that want to do many things so to raise as much money as possible.

"If I was a billionaire, I'd pay for them all. But I'm not, I'm still working on that."

John King joined the Royal Navy in 1943 during the Second World War. He was drafted onto HMS Janice, which was involved in the bombardment of both coasts of Italy.

In 1944, during the Allied landings at Anzio, HMS Janice was sunk. King was one of just 52 sailors who survived the sinking.

The £1 million target will help ensure numerous veterans can experience meaningful moments as the numbers of WWII survivors continue to decline.
