Remainers fume as Brexiteer and Wetherspoons creator nominated to receive knighthood
It has been revealed that Tim Martin, the founder of the JD Wetherspoon chain of pubs and pro-Brexit campaigner, could be knighted in the New Year Honours.
Remainers have been left livid over the decision due to Martin's outspoken views on Brexit. In the past the pub founder argued that the EU was growing less democratic in pursuit of “ever-closer union” and thereby stifling economic growth.
Mr Martin said the economic impacts of Brexit were worthwhile trade-offs for greater democracy in the UK.
Talking to GB News journalist Henry Hill said: "I think it's a real shame that this is being seen through the context of Brexit.
Because actually Tim Martin runs a very successful business that creates a lot of jobs, provides an awful lot of cheap drink in expensive times.
"But the thing I think that he really does deserve credit for is the fact that Wetherspoons takes heritage buildings that might otherwise have been left derelict and turns them into lovely spaces that people can still use."
