Wilbur Chapman says there is a rise in 'serious crime'

NYPD (New York Police Department) veteran Wilbur Chapman has suggested that law changes in America may have emboldened criminals.

He joined Patrick Christys on GBN America to discuss rising crime in New York, warning there is “a lot more violence” on the streets of the Big Apple.

“We’re looking at serious crime”, he said.

“There’s a lot more violence. Felonious assault, attacks on people, forcible robberies.

“Shootings and homicides have gone down slightly, but that’s not really the bellwether.

“There’s been a huge increase because of change in laws and property crime where you see recidivists looting stores over and over again, being arrested and then turning loose again.

“There’s a genuine sense that New York is the safest big city in the world, except if you’re a victim of crime.

“This all gives to a sense of insecurity on the part of people who work there and live there and a concern as to whether or not the laws changed to benefit the criminals than to benefit law enforcement and the population at large.”

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

Asked about some of the issues that has contributed to the crime wave, Chapman told GBN America that New York’s sanctuary city status has left the city “ill prepared” to deal with a swathe of migrants.

“New York has always been a sanctuary city, but has never been called upon to activate it”, he said.

“As a result, when the migrant situation developed and people from the southern border came up, the city was ill prepared to process people and care for them.

“In addition, we’ve had an ongoing problem for the last 30 years.

“The shelter system in New York has been an absolute disaster. Homeless people and those with mental issues had no place to go after the state institutions were closed in the late 70s, early 80s.

“These people would prefer to be on the train and on the street than be in the homeless shelter system because it doesn’t support their needs and they don’t feel safe.

“The city has failed in that regard for years, and now it’s showing itself in the manifestation of crime.”

New York’s governor is planning to send the National Guard to the New York City subway system to help police.

Kathy Hochul announced plans earlier this month to deploy 750 members of the National Guard to the Network to carry out bag checks for weapons at entrances to busy train stations.

"For people who are thinking about bringing a gun or knife on the subway, at least this creates a deterrent effect," the Democrat told a news conference.

"They might be thinking, 'you know what, it just may just not be worth it because I listened to the mayor and I listened to the governor and they have a lot more people who are going to be checking my bags'."
