A FedEx plane has caught on fire causing the aircraft to make an emergency landing at Newark Airport.

Bystanders are reported to have heard "explosions" at the major American airport that serves New York City.

The plane set off from the New Jersey airport and promptly returned to the runway after discovering the blaze, which was reportedly caused by a "bird strike", NBC Philadelphia reported.

Soon after, emergency services were recorded responding to the scene although it has been reported that no one has sustained any injuries.

One post on X reported: "Engine failure/fire FedEx 3609 at Newark on takeoff, returned to land."

Another aircraft earlier this week had to make an emergency landing at the same airport on Tuesday.

The flight 1544 took off from Newark Airport early in the morning at 6am and was set to descend on the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas.

However, the plane was forced to divert its journey and take its passengers back to New Jersey as the pilots have blamed a mechanical problem, Port Authority officials reported.

The plane had 176 passengers on board, as well as six staff members.

"United flight 1544 to Las Vegas returned to Newark Liberty International Airport to address a possible mechanical issue," the airline announced.

"The flight landed safely, and all passengers deplaned normally at the gate. We have arranged for a different aircraft to take our customers to Las Vegas this morning."

So far, the airline has not specified the mechanical problem.

GETTY

The problem earlier this week came just a few weeks after an aircraft flying from Nigeria was driven to make an emergency landing at Newark Airport.

During the incident, six people were reported being injured after the aircraft experienced an unanticipated jolt in the air.

Bound for Washington DC, the flight was then forced to turn around back to Nigeria following the technical issue.
