A petition is calling for Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to be cancelled due to a planned performance by members of the LGBTQ+ community.

More than 36,000 people have signed the campaign which has been launched by "pro-traditional values" organisation, One Million Moms.

The annual parade has been one of the holiday's most famous events since it began in 1924.

Every year festivities include floats, marching bands and live performances from popular musicians.

However, this year entertainment will feature LGBT+ performances and has received backlash from One Million Moms.

In a statement, the group said: "The non-binary and transgender extravaganza on display this Thanksgiving will be brought to you by Macy's during their annually sponsored Thanksgiving Day Parade.

"Unless they are forewarned about it, this year's holiday parade will potentially expose tens of millions of viewers at home to the liberal LGBTQ agenda."

The campaign has called out two non-binary actors who could appear in musical numbers in the parade.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

The two are Justin David Sullivan, who performs as May in the play “& Juliet”, and Tony-award-winning actor, Alex Newell.

Parade chiefs have not confirmed whether the pair will be performing.

The organisation, launched by the conservative and Christian fundamentalist group The American Family Association, states that they will censor the “filth many segments of our society, especially the entertainment media, are throwing at our children.”

In response, the media group LGBTQ Nation has described the petition as “alarmist” and the group has a history of “throwing a fit anytime any company anywhere publicly acknowledges the existence of queer people.”

The conservative group have dubbed Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as a “non-binary and transgender extravaganza.”

Many online users hit back at the boycott, adding that the event sounded like “a good time”.

One said: “Don’t they realise that actually makes it sound even better?”

Another added: “Threatening us with a good time, are we?”
