There have been 11 reported attacks by the dog on staff members

Joe Biden's dog has been removed from the White House after more than 10 attacks on members of the secret service.

The dog, called Commander, bit members of the secret service on at least 11 occasions in less than a year.

In the latest incident, the two-year-old German shepherd bit a member of the secret service at the White House in September.

Now, it appears Commander has been removed "while next steps are evaluated".

"The President and First Lady care deeply about the safety of those who work at the White House and those who protect them every day," Elizabeth Alexander, communications director for the First Lady said.

"They remain grateful for the patience and support of the US Secret Service and all involved, as they continue to work through solutions.

"Commander is not presently on the White House campus while next steps are evaluated."

The dog attacks were publicly unveiled by the Department of Homeland Security in July.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

During the September attack, the Service's chief of communications, Anthony Guglielmi said the female officer required medical treatment on the site but is now "doing just fine".

One of the more serious instances happened in November 2022 when a Secret Service agent was bitten on the arm and thigh and was referred to the hospital for treatment.

The Bidens were reportedly working with the Secret Service and the White House residence staff "on additional leashing protocols and training" for Commander.

Commander is the younger of the Biden family's two German Shepherds.

Another Biden dog, Major, has also been involved in several biting incidents with Secret Service agents.

He has also been moved out of the White House and now lives with Biden family friends.

It is unclear if or when Commander may return to the White House.
