The Security Service chief was being grilled by US lawmakers

Donald Trump’s assassination attempt hearing was hijacked from within by Oversight Committee Ranking Member Jamie Raskin.

The Republican said the incident in Pennsylvania is part of a greater conversation about gun control.

Associates are seen holding up banners behind him as he calls for an “assault weapons ban” during the hearing which was put together to grill the Secret Service Director over security lapses when Trump narrowly avoided death.

Speaking at the hearing, Raskin said: “We must ask hard questions about whether our laws are making it too easy for potential assassins to obtain firearms and AR-15s specifically”, he said.

People took to social media to lament Raskin’s speech, with one user branding it “sickening”.

The assassination attempt saw the former president shot on July 13 while addressing a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania.

He was wounded in his upper right ear by Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old man from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

The shooter fired eight rounds with an AR-15-style rifle from the roof of a building located approximately 400 feet (120 meters) from the stage.

He killed audience member Corey Comperatore and critically injured two others.

The US Secret Service’s counter-sniper team subsequently shot and killed the 20-year-old, but have not escaped criticism.

The shocking incident has led many to question the security force, with its director now being called on to resign.

Crooks was flagged by rally attendees to security personnel before the attempt on Trump’s life took place, leading many to question why it took so long for them to act.
