Fellow actor and friend Michael Imperioli confirmed the news on Instagram

Paul Herman, best known for his role in American crime drama The Sopranos, has died aged 76.

Mr Herman, who played "Beansie" in the hit show, was confirmed dead by fellow actor and friend Michael Imperioli.

In a statement on Instagram, Mr Imperioli said: "Our friend and colleague Paul Herman has passed away.

"Paulie was just a great dude.

"A first-class storyteller and raconteur and one hell of an actor. Goodfellas, Once Upon a Time in America, The Irishman, and of course The Sopranos are some highlights.

"Paulie lived around the corner from me the last few years and I am glad we got to spend some time together before he left us.

"I'll miss him. Lots of love to his family, friends, and community of actors and filmmakers."

Tributes have begun to pour in for Mr Herman with actress Debi Mazar, who appeared alongside him on fellow US show Goodfellas replying to Mr Imperioli's post by saying: "Noooooo!!! Oh no" along with several sad emojis.

Ms Mazar added: "I have such a long history with Paulie since the early 80’s."
