Residents are being urged to avoid using their water supply for drinking, cooking and brushing their teeth

Thames Water have issued a notice to residents in Surrey, warning them not to drink tap water after a fuel leak.

A total of 616 households in Bramley Village are being urged to avoid using their water supply for drinking, cooking and brushing their teeth.

Bottled water stations are being set up in Bramley following a historical fuel leak from the village petrol station.

Thames Water has been carrying out additional water sampling in the area since October 2023 when a large fuel spill at a nearby petrol station forecourt polluted streams.

The "do not drink" warning has been issued while further investigations are performed.

Thames Water confirmed test results show a "possible determination in quality" in some areas.

Jeremy Hunt - who was elected as MP for South West Surrey - and Waverley Borough Councillor Jane Austin issued the update earlier this evening.

Writing on social media, Hunt said: "I have this afternoon been on a call with the UKHSA, DEFRA, Thames Water and Asda with Cllr Austin.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

"Thames Water are implementing a drinking water stop notice across much of Bramley Village. Please see the press release below.

"I have requested that bottled water stations are in Bramley itself - they are being set up now."

Tess Fayers, Operations Director for the Thames Valley and Home Counties said: "We are asking 616 Bramley properties not to drink the tap water following recent water sampling results.

"The health and safety of our customers is our number one priority, and we would like to reassure residents that this is a precautionary measure.

"We are in the process of delivering letters and bottled water to the affected properties.

"We are also identifying locations to set-up bottled water stations and we will share this information with our customers as soon as possible.

"We are already on site in the village proactively replacing sections of our pipes on Horsham Road to reduce the risk to our customers."
