West Mercia Police are appealing for witnesses after receiving reports of the incident at a store in Stourport, Worcestershire

Police are appealing for witnesses following reports of youths chasing each other with a weapon at a Tesco store.

West Mercia Police issued the appeal after receiving reports of an incident taking place at around 4.30pm yesterday at the supermarket giant's store in Stourport, Worcestershire.

The force said a male was chasing around two others with a "metal instrument".

Although original reports suggested the weapon was a machete, the police confirmed this was not the case and that instead it is believed to be a "short pole".

The man is described as white, aged around 16 to 17, of slim build with brown hair and wearing black shoes, black tracksuit bottoms, a bright orange top and a bag with a red and black strap.

Inspector Lisa Hornberger, of Wyre Forest Police, said: “We were called to reports of a male who was with two other males running around Tesco believed to be carrying a weapon this evening.

“We would like to reassure the public that, working with the store, it has been confirmed to us this is believed to be a short pole of some description and not a machete type instrument which has been rumoured on social media.

“We do not believe there is any wider risk to the public and are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward and help us identify this person and/or the people he was with so they can help us with our enquiries.

This comes after a Tesco worker was rushed to hospital after being sprayed with a substance in a "chemical incident".

Emergency services were called to Oxlow Lane, in Dagenham, East London, at 3.49pm on July 31 following reports of an injured man in the Tesco store.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) dispatched two fire engines following the "chemical incident".

Police say that a member of staff at Tesco had been involved in an altercation with a customer.

It has been reported that a customer left the store before returning and spraying the male worker with an unknown substance.

The victims injuries are thought to be non-life threatening.
