A British man has died and his wife was left injured after being hit by a car outside a hotel in a holiday hotspot.

The 50-year-old husband and his 48-year-old wife were staying at the Costa Narejos Hotel in Los Narejos, Murcia.


The couple returned to the hotel just after 11pm on Tuesday and were hit by the car while crossing the road.

The driver, who was not named, fled the scene.

He was later caught by police and a breath test showed he was more than three-times over the alcohol limit.

The 23-year-old man, who was driving a Peugeot 406, was pulled over with a smashed windscreen.

The driver was also found to have been behind the wheel without a licence.

Paramedics treated and stabilised the condition of the couple.

The woman taken to the ICU of the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia City.

The husband was admitted to the Los Arcos del Mar Menor Hospital in San Javier.

Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he later died from his injuries.

"A caller said the car had gone over a zebra crossing at high speed and witnesses said the two injured tourists spoke English," a member of the emergency services told El Espanol.

Los Narejos, located in the region of Murcia, is known as “Little England” due to the number of British holidaymakers who make the trip to the holiday hotspot.

Murcia saw tourists spend a whopping €367.5million between January and April.

British holidaymakers make up 27 per cent of visitors to the region, well above the 17 per cent visiting from France.

Murcia experienced a tourist boom in April 2024, registering 110,914 visitors versus 93,528 in the same month last year.

Spain has witnessed a number of car collisions involving Britons recently.

A four-month-old baby was killed in a tragic crash when a car mounted a pavement and ploughed into crowds in Lanzarote last March.

However, no further details have been released about the British holidaymakers following Tuesday’s incident.
