Some critics say Police Scotland can not be trusted to 'defend' the public

SNP bosses have been accused of "undermining" police after urging pro-independence vigilantes to defend Glasgow against far-right "thugs".

It comes as Police Scotland can not be trusted to "defend" the public, according to Glasgow councillor and co-convenor of the SNP Socialists, Graham Campbell and the SNP’s national Bame convenor, Shelly-Ann Brown.

The pair have called on independence supporters to "occupy" key areas of the city and to "oppose racists on the streets" themselves.

Despite Scotland not yet hosting any far-Right riots, there are concerns that some could break out at a "pro-UK rally" promoted by Tommy Robinson.

Police Scotland acknowledged the plans and said they had a "proportionate policing plan" in place.

However, council leader, Susan Aitken said it was not enough and "we need to go much further".

The groups of SNP chiefs said Police Scotland’s record had been "lacking in policing fascist groups" and that the state, also including Scottish courts, would not sufficiently defend potential victims.

"It is now up to the citizens of Glasgow to do that," they said, in an article for the Sunday National newspaper.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

"So let’s turn up in our numbers, occupy our key locations and say: 'They shall not (and shall never) pass'!"

"Only then will the police do the right thing and prevent these violent thugs from entering our city centre at all.

They added: "If independence is a progressive mission that breaks with the UK’s shameful record of racism and imperialism, then the most important place for any independence supporter to be on September 7 is in Glasgow."

People have been urged to coordinate with the Radical Independence Campaign, a far-Left campaign group, to "build the largest possible mobilisation on the day".

Officers say it is unlikely that the same violence which broke out in England, will erupt in Scotland.

However, Police Scotland is aware of the protest planned for Saturday in George Square - where Robinson, the founder of the English Defence League, has threatened to attend in person.

Sharon Dowey, deputy justice spokesman for the Scottish Tories, condemned the "violent protests and destruction" but said calls from SNP figures for members of the public to do the job of police were "completely inappropriate".

SNP backbencher Audrey Nicoll told The Telegraph: "Rest assured, Police Scotland have the powers and authority to deal with disorder of this kind and ensure public safety is maintained."
