The mystery surrounding the death of a bus driver has been reclassified as murder following a horrific crash last week.

Gordon Stirling, 23, from Crosshouse, was rushed to hospital on August 14 following an incident on the A77 in East Ayrshire, Scotland.


He was declared dead five days after his single-decker Stagecoach collided with a white Ford Transit van at a busy junction at around 5.30pm.

A 42-year-old van driver was also taken to hospital after suffering serious injuries during the crash.

Police Scotland have since confirmed a murder probe has been launched.

The force is also appealing for more information.

Police Scotland’s detective chief inspector Jennifer McCulloch said: “Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

“Our thoughts remain with the family of Gordon Stirling and we are providing them with support as the investigation progresses.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has dashcam footage which may assist is asked to call 101, quoting incident number 3147 of Monday, August 14, 2023.”

Stagecoach has since paid its respects to Stirling.

The company also confirmed a full investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Fiona Docherty, Stagecoach West Scotland's managing director said: “The whole Stagecoach team is devastated about this and we all send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

“We are also supporting those colleagues at Stagecoach who knew him.

“We thank the emergency services for their response and the NHS team at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. A full investigation is underway into this incident.”

Friends have also taken to social media to pay tribute to the 23-year-old.

One said: “Have been thinking of him a lot over the last few days since I heard about the accident.

“Car enthusiast, fellow DC5 owner and one of the nicest lads I've had the privilege of knowing. Rest in peace Gordon.”

Another added: “Gordy was the most genuine guy out there. Pleasure of calling him one of my pals.”
