The attack left two friends 'wary' of returning to the city centre

Two refugees have been jailed after conducting "very nasty and vindictive acts" in a city centre.

The two friends are now wary of ever returning to Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent after being viciously attacked on a night out by Wleed Mohmed and Yousef Ahmed.

Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard trouble started after Ahmed, aged 22, assaulted a woman in the city centre on the evening of September 4, 2021.

Mohmed, aged 31, got involved and the pair appeared to act together, despite not knowing each other.

The pair approached and had a conversation with a woman and two men.

After a few minutes, one of the men punched both defendants as he feared they would assault him. A short time later the defendants started to fight with him and then with his friend who went to help.

The court heard the second victim was knocked to the ground, however the defendants continued their attack, reported Stoke-on-TrentLive.

The first victim returned to help his friend. He was also knocked to the floor, leaving him unconscious and not moving. However, despite his motionless state, both defendants walked away but returned and kicked him.

Both defendants pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Ahmed, of Malkin Way, Middleport, also admitted assault by beating. Mohmed, of Hollings Street, Fenton, had drunk heavily and cannot say how he came to become involved in the incident.

Stoke Crown Court how heard both men are refugees and have either received or applied for asylum.

The court heard how one victim suffered a fractured cheekbone. He could only eat soft food, could not sleep properly and was unable to work for two months. Both are now wary of visiting Hanley and the city centre.

Judge Graeme Smith sentenced Mohmed for 45 months and jailed Ahmed for 40 months.

He said: "They were two very nasty and vindictive attacks."
