It follows the ITV drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office

Former Post Office boss Paula Vennells is facing fresh calls to have her CBE rescinded as a petition hits one million signatures.

Demands to remove her CBE emerged again after ITV aired a new drama into the Horizon scandal, Mr Bates vs The Post Office.

The series tells the story of former subpostmasters and subpostmistresses who were held liable by the Post Office for financial discrepancies shown by its computerised accounting system.

Vennells oversaw the organisation during this period and continuously denied problems with the system.

It comes as last week the petition hit 100,000. It has now jumped to a million the space of less than a week.

The petition hit the million mark four days after the final episode of the ITV series was broadcast.

The petition read: "Evidence has been produced that the Post Office engaged in a mass cover-up which led to the wrongful prosecution of 550 Post Office Staff many of whom were subsequently jailed, bankrupted and in some cases, sadly took their own lives.

"Having been handed a CBE for services to the Post Office, and moved out into other senior positions in government and healthcare, it is only right that this award is now withdrawn through the process of forfeiture."

Last week, the Metropolitan Police also confirmed that it is investigating the Post Office over potential fraud offences after the handling of the Horizon IT scandal.

Vennells has previously said she is "truly sorry" for the "suffering" caused to subpostmasters who were wrongly convicted of offences.

Last week, a spokesperson from the Post Office said: "We sincerely apologise to victims of the devastating impact of the Post Office Horizon IT scandal on the lives of so many.

"We are doing all we can to provide redress and urge anyone affected who has not yet come forward to do so."

Sky News reports that since Mr Bates Vs The Post Office was shown on ITV1, 50 new potential victims have approached lawyers.

Rishi Sunak said the government is "looking at" the option of fully exoneratingthe Post Office branch managers involved in the scandal.

According to the Prime Minister, justice secretary Alex Chalk is considering ways of helping to clear the names of those convicted.

Since the ITV programme debuted, the scandal has been dubbed the most widespread miscarriage of justice in UK history.
