A blaze broke out in a toilet on the estate

Patients had to be evacuated after a hospital fire, in what police fear was an arson attack.

Officers are investigating the cause of the blaze which broke out at around 6pm last night at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

Fire fighters were scrambled to help quickly evacuated the estate, with concerns for if it spread, given the high rise nature of the building.

Patients and staff were required to gather outside, away from the building while the fire was put out.

There were no casualties from the incident with the fire failing to spread.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "There was a small fire in a toilet.

"We've only got one [appliance] there now but we have to send [multiple appliances] because it is a high rise building, and there is a potential risk there.

"This was a tiny fire and it was pretty much out when we got there."

Devon and Cornwall Police are now leading the investigation into the cause of the fire.

CCTV footage from the hospital has been handed over to officers.

One man has been arrested on suspicion of arson.

The suspect remains in police custody, said officers.
