Nearly 1,000 entrants are taking part across 26 categories, including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free pies

Pie makers are hoping to be crowned at the historic British Pie Awards, which returned to Melton Mowbray this week for its 17th year.

As part of British Pie Week, an expert panel of judges are tasting trusted traditional flavours like steak and ale, to more experimental recipes, including Moroccan goat, saffron and prune pie.


With 900 entrants and just 26 categories, including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free pies, there's plenty of competition.

Today, the Supreme Champion announcement will also see one overall winner being crowned The Pie of Pies.

GB News visited The Handmade Pie Company in Dinnington, South Yorkshire ahead of the event.

The family run pie shop in Dinnington is in the running at the British Pie Awards and even though the busy store has only been open for six weeks, it's already its hoping for a prize for its pies.

John Saynor runs The Handmade Pie Company with his wife Tracy. He told GB News: "Steak and ale is our most popular pie, that's the one that's in the British Pie Awards. All the steak is slow cooked overnight, and then we shred it and mix it with Tracy's signature gravy.

"We've got chicken pies and we've also now been able to put fruit pies on, and we do quiches as well.

"It's [the British Pie Awards] a big British tradition and it lets especially independent people like us to get our name out there, especially if we win the award."

Britons eat £1billion worth of pies every year, according to Dr Matthew O’Callaghan OBE, Chairman of Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association.

He said that Brits have developed this delicacy more than any other nation to give us the range and styles of pies that we know and love today.

One of them, the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie, has even gained official PGI protected status in the European Union along with the Cornish Pasty and the Forfar Bridie.

Pies have been made for centuries John Saynor, of The Handmade Pie Company, says pies a well-loved UK meal.

He added: "Everybody loves a good pie. We do meals with the mash and the chips and the peas and the gravy and we'll put baked beans on if they want them.

"It's just tradition isn't it - everybody loves a good pie."

For the customers here at The Handmade Pie Company, pies are one of Britain's best dishes.

Lynn Rowbotham said: "They're always full of goodness aren't they? Hearty, filling, and you can put them with so many things: different vegetables, different types of potatoes. Yeah, they're just a good all rounder.

Luke Ellory, said: "It's feel good food isn't it? It's not like takeaway food. It's just feel good food and makes you feel at home."

Jayne Hill, said: "You know if it's got a nice filling and a nice pastry, there's nothing better. I just like them, they're easy meals."

Brenda Mcpherson, said: "My family love all the pies here. I've come in about three times a week this week.

"I especially [like] the quiches that you can see coming out of the oven. They're freshly made and you can take them home and freeze them."
