The chief executive of the Post Office received the award in 2019

The former chief executive of the Post Office, Paula Vennells has been stripped of her CBE following the Post Office scandal.

Vennells, who received the award in 2019, has faced backlash following the wrongful prosecution of hundreds of Post Office staff.

She will be formally stripped of her CBE by the King for "bringing the honours system into disrepute", according to a list published on the Cabinet Office website.

Vennells previously confirmed she would give up the honour.

Hundreds of subpostmasters were convicted of swindling money on the basis of evidence from a flawed IT system.

Between 1999 and 2015, many people were found guilty and despite years of campaigning, just a small number of them had their convictions overturned.

As the long-running battle for justice has ensued, ITV drama Mr Bates Vs The Post Office highlighted the scandal this year.

In 2022 a statutory public inquiry began into what has been described as the "worst miscarriage of justice in recent British legal history".

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Vennells has faced calls to return £2.93million in performance-related perks and payments in lieu of pension.

It comes as the 65-year-old pocketed as much as £5million for being in charge during the Horizon IT scandal.

A petition demanding that her CBE be rescinded hit more than 1.2 million signatures.

The former Post Office CEO previously said: "I continue to support and focus on co-operating with the inquiry and expect to be giving evidence in the coming months.

"I have so far maintained my silence as I considered it inappropriate to comment publicly while the inquiry remains ongoing and before I have provided my oral evidence.

"I am, however, aware of the calls from sub-postmasters and others to return my CBE. I have listened and I confirm that I return my CBE with immediate effect.

"I am truly sorry for the devastation caused to the sub-postmasters and their families, whose lives were torn apart by being wrongly accused and wrongly prosecuted as a result of the Horizon system.

"I now intend to continue to focus on assisting the inquiry and will not make any further public comment until it has concluded."
