Maximen had been attending the carnival with her daughter and friends when she got caught up in a fight between a group of men. At the time, she had been crouched chatting to her friends as they sat on the ground with their children.

Prosecutor Ed Brown KC told the court Maximen and her group had got caught up in the middle of a "horrifying outbreak of violence".

The disturbance broke out on Golborne Road, North Kensington, at about 6pm.

Thibou was also convicted of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm to 20-year-old Adjei Isaac with intent, and possessing an offensive weapon.

Speaking to reporters outside court, Jacobs said: "Cher was pure magic radiant, loving, passionate, and kind. She was a dedicated mother, a devoted granddaughter, niece, sister, and friend."

Maximen was knocked to the ground during the altercation before partially getting to her feet.

Shakeil Thibou had first thrust a "huge" knife repeatedly towards Isaac's stomach, only missing him because the victim drew back.

He then raised the knife directly towards Maximen and deliberately stabbed her in her groin.

Brown said: "The injuries inflicted on Ms Maximen were fatal the defendant had killed her. It was a truly shocking attack

Detective Chief Inspector Alex Gammampila from Scotland Yard said: "My heart goes out to Cher's family and friends. She was a loving mother who went to Notting Hill Carnival to enjoy what should have been a care-free day."

"In stark contrast, Shakeil Thibou went to Carnival not to be part of the celebration, but to engage in violence."

The judge set sentencing for Shakeil Thibou on May 16.

Maximen's cousin Lawrence Hoo told Sky News: "I've lost my parents. I've lost my brother. Nothing has felt like this ever."

He described her as "a bright light" who lit up any room she entered, adding: "It's the most senseless act to someone who had so much life and so much to give."
