A police officer has died after being struck by a lorry whilst helping at the scene of a crash, with the motorist also perishing in a double tragedy.

North Yorkshire Police constable Rosie Prior, 45, and motorist Ryan Welford, 41, were both standing on the A19 at Bagby, near Thirsk, North Yorkshire when they were struck by the truck. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

A teenage boy who had been a passenger in the motorist’s car - who was standing on the verge with Prior and Welford - is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

Prior had been assisting the 41-year-old and the teenager from an earlier collision when the heavy goods vehicle (HGV) struck.

The first collision had involved a silver Audi, driven by Welford, and a black Ford Focus.

The force’s chief constable Tim Forber paid tribute to Prior, confirming her death with “profound sadness”.
