The corporation spent over £7million on rebranding logos for TV and online in an attempt to modernise their brand

Nigel Farage has slammed the BBC and its decision to spend £7million of taxpayers’ money on rebranding and creating new logos to use on its channels and online.

A Freedom of Information Act put forward by the Daily Express found that the corporation had spend £7,261,039 on digital rebranding which began in October 2021.

Kerris Bright, chief customer officer at the BBC, said at the time “Over the coming months we will be modernising all aspects of our services so the experience feels coherent wherever you access our content.

“We’ll join the dots between the different bits of the BBC through simplified layouts and graphics. For example, BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds are already evolving to help our audiences discover more of what’s available.

“There are plenty of little changes, designed to make a big difference and we’ll introduce them gradually across our services.

“iPlayer and Sounds will continue to change over the next six months and beyond, while News, Weather, Sport and Bitesize will follow after that.

“As we update our digital services it makes sense to modernise how we present them too. Updated, recognisable colours, logos and graphics will identify each service and help improve navigation between them.”

The cost of the rebranding is equal to over 45,000 TV licences.

Nigel said: “The BBC? Yes, the BBC. They've just spent £7million of your money modernising, updating. Yes, they've been to a couple of design shops and they've got some new logos.

“Let me put those up on the screen for those that are watching on television. Those of you listening on radio have really the benefit of this one because they are so ugly, sort of ugly cuboid structures.

“Goodness only knows how all of that cost 7 million quid. But that's the BBC. They just want to be modern and trendy. But they failed with this one.”

Earlier this month former BBC director-general Lord Hall of Birkenhead backed a “reformed licence fee” or progressive household levy as the way to fund the corporation in future.

Ex-culture minister Nadine Dorries branded the TV licence fee “outdated” and in January asserted that “this licence fee announcement will be the last”.
