Mahon won £35 on his first card but couldn't believe his eyes when he saw the winnings on the other

A newlywed couple have cause to celebrate after scooping a major six-figure National Lottery win on a scratchcard while waiting for the bus.

Will Mahon, 56, and his wife Emma, 50, from Farnborough, Hampshire, won the prize just months after tying the knot in June this year.

The pair, who had been together for 30 years before marrying, marked their windfall by returning to the hotel where they spent their wedding night.

Will, a digger driver and part-time DJ, purchased the two winning scratchcards from Totland Supermarket on Mayfield Road, whilst waiting for a bus to collect his van.

He initially won £35 on his first card but his luck would soon surge after checking the second card.

Checking the other card, Mahon couldn't believe his eyes when he revealed a £100,000 prize on the Black Pearl scratchcard.

"I had left my van at my local pub on the Friday night after a late night of DJing, so on Saturday morning I was just waiting for the bus so that I could go and collect it," he explained.

"As I had a bit of time before it arrived, I decided to buy a few Scratchcards from the corner shop.

"I was excited enough after scratching the first one and winning £35, but it came as a complete surprise when I scratched away the £100,000 win on the next Scratchcard."

Overwhelmed by the win, he struggled to keep his composure on the bus ride.

He continued: "When I eventually got on the bus I was in a complete daze and felt like I was going to pass out.

"I knew that if I did pass out, I might very well lose the ticket, so I tried my best to keep my cool!"

Calling her new husband to discuss what they could buy their grandchildren for Christmas, Emma couldn't believe her ears at the news.

Will told her: "We can buy them whatever we like because I've just won £100,000."

Emma replied: "I don't believe you!" but quickly changed her tune upon seeing the scratchcard with her own eyes.

The happy couple celebrated their win by returning to The Aviator Hotel, where they had spent their wedding night.

On that occasion, the hotel had upgraded them from a standard double room to a honeymoon suite upon seeing their wedding attire.

Will said: "Our wedding day was made that extra bit memorable when we were upgraded to the honeymoon suite.

"It only made sense to come back here and celebrate the fact that we can now splash out on a few more upgrades if we fancy it – thanks to this National Lottery Scratchcard win."

The Mahons have exciting plans for their windfall.

They intend to use the money for travel upgrades, including paying off a previously booked cruise around Spain and France in full.

Will has also treated himself to a week-long fishing trip with a friend.

The couple plans to share the remainder of the money with their two children, both aged 27.

Will said: "I think it has finally sunk in that the money is ours, and we're so happy to be able to celebrate it with our family.

"We have had such an incredible year so far; with the wedding, the honeymoon and the room upgrade on our wedding night, and now we can make a few more upgrades in the future without hesitation thanks to the win."
