A 69-year-old Welsh handyman is celebrating picking up the win

A Welsh handyman has secured £120,000 after making a spur-of-the-moment lottery purchase when he spotted a rare parking space outside his local shop.

Adrian Brennan, 69, from the Rhondda Valleys, hadn't bought a ticket from the Co-op in Ferndale for ages because he could never find parking.

But when he drove past and saw an available space, he seized the opportunity.

The impulse decision proved life-changing when he matched all five main numbers in the Set For Life draw, ensuring the handyman pocketed £10,000 a month for one year.

"I buy National Lottery tickets from lots of places. I impulse buy," Adrian said.

The Ferndale resident checked the lottery numbers on his mobile at 10pm that night and was stunned to discover his win.

He immediately called his daughter Stacey for confirmation.

"I asked her to check out the winning numbers because I thought I'd won £10,000," Brennan recalled. "She said, 'you're joking' then went on to check for me, saying yes but that I'd actually won £10,000 every month for a year."

Despite the life-changing news, he remained remarkably composed. "When Stacey and I finished talking it was late at night, but I celebrated and toasted my win with a can of lager," he said.

The next morning, he calmly phoned the National Lottery and then "went out to do a few jobs, just like any other day really".

The father-of-two and grandfather-of-six has already prioritised sharing his windfall with loved ones.

"I'm going to treat Stacey and my son Kerry and the grandchildren, who have already put in their requests including an electric bike, and a set of darts," the widower said.

He's also planning to change his car, though hasn't decided which model yet. Brennan particularly appreciates the monthly payment structure of his prize.

"I love the fact I get an amount every month and can decide what to do with it," he explained.

He intends to spend more time pursuing his woodworking hobby in his shed.

He said: "I was a carpenter for nearly twenty years and just love working with wood. I make all sorts of things from chairs to ornaments."

Brennan has lived in the Welsh valleys his entire life and has no plans to fully retire despite his lottery win.

"I'm a very proud Welshman and love the valleys. I'm very lucky to be able to live and work in this beautiful countryside," he shared.

He continues to work part-time as a handyman, adding: "I don't think I will fully retire but this win will give my family and I lots of treats and a lovely cushion to enjoy a few more things in life."
