CCTV footage emerged of a man appearing to strike the waitress with a plate as she served food at his table

A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an "unprovoked attack" on a Nando's waitress in London.

The incident, which occurred in March last year, saw the worker - identified as Zahra - being assaulted by a customer wearing a black beanie and dark hoodie.

The attack was captured on CCTV footage which went viral, showing the moment a bearded man appeared to strike the waitress with a plate as she served food at his table.

The force of the blow sent Zahra stumbling backwards as shocked diners turned to witness the incident.

The man quickly left the restaurant with a woman and child, abandoning a full plate of food at the table.

CCTV then captured the waitress holding her face as she rushed away from the scene following the blow.

Speaking to the BBC, Zahra said: "I was shocked. I couldn't register what happened, I couldn't process what had happened."

While on TikTok, she added: "With all the attention that the video has gotten and seeing everything in the news about violence against women, violence against young women, the violence against girls, I think it's important to speak up about what actually took place.

"Before explaining, I want to say what's more concerning than the mass behaviour was the failure of the Metropolitan Police and their conduct.

"I was grossly let down by them. They have reopened the investigation now.

"Thanks for all of the support and the attention it's been receiving online. And for that I'm grateful."

The student reported that two Met Police officers were present in the building when the alleged assault occurred - but they allowed the man to leave.

Zahra claimed one female officer appeared unconcerned by the assault and directed her to speak with a male colleague.

"I was really disappointed and extremely upset by that," she added.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman has now confirmed an arrest has been made, stating: "A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an incident where a waitress was assaulted at a Nandos restaurant in Stratford in March 2024."

The force had previously apologised for not handling the case promptly.

A Nando's spokeswoman called the incident "shocking and unprovoked", adding: "We reported it to the police immediately and have supported our colleague since."

She added that "the safety of our colleagues and customers is our priority".
