Comedian and author Konstantin Kisin has hit out at censorship of free speech, claiming “multiculturalism has failed”.

Speaking at the ARC conference in London on Wednesday, the host of the Triggernometry podcast argued that society’s endeavour into multiculturalism had caused division within communities.

"For decades, our societies have experimented with identity politics and multiculturalism—and both have failed. The result? Division, tension, and a tolerance of the intolerable in the name of so-called community cohesion,” he said.

He added: “Multi-ethnic societies can work; multicultural societies cannot. We must be British, American, Australian—whatever we are—first. Everything else, whether race, gender, or background, comes a distant second."

Kisin followed his point with a scathing commentary on net zero, claiming its agenda is “a fundamental sense that human beings are a pestilence on the planet”.

“This thinking has become so ingrained that many now refuse to have children due to climate fears. We must never accept this grotesque moral inversion. The birth of a child is not a burden—it is a universal good. And any civilization that ceases to believe this, is doomed to disappear."

Kisin defended the ability to speak about these controversial topics, claiming we have “allowed ourselves to be backed into a corner” regarding free speech.

“The accusation is that we want to return to a cruel past where people could be mean and nasty. But the truth is, we don’t champion free speech to go back—we do so because, without it, we cannot move forward,” he stated.

“Free speech is essential to free thought, and without free thought, there is no progress. It is not a left-wing or right-wing value; it is a Western value."

Kisin’s remarks come as almost 300 people in the UK have been charged with online “speech crimes” since the Online Safety Act came into force in 2023.

Data obtained through a Freedom of Information request by The Telegraph showed that 292 people have been charged with communications offences.

Multiple of these were after the riots in the summer of 2024 following the Southport stabbings.

These led to what are thought to be some of the first convictions under the new law.

The UK’s online safety rules are reportedly seen as “orwellian” in the US, with US Vice President JD Vance hitting out at them while speaking at a Munich security conference on Friday.

He said: “In Britain and across Europe free speech, I fear, is in retreat.”

He added: “Most concerningly, I look to our very dear friends the United Kingdom, where the backslide away from conscience rights has placed the basic liberties of religious Britons, in particular, in the crosshairs.”
