An investigation into the fire is being carried out by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and Greater Manchester Police to establish the circumstances.

So far no arrests have been made.

A spokesperson for GMP said: “At 4.22am Sunday morning, November 10, we were called to reports of a fire at a house on Round Thorn Road, Middleton.

“Emergency services attended, and sadly a woman in her thirties was found inside the house deceased. An investigation is under way to establish the circumstances.”

Lee Coleman from the fire and rescue service, said on Sunday: “Five fire engines from Middleton, Chadderton, Blackley, Phillips Park and Manchester Central fire stations attended a house fire on Roundthorn Road, Middleton."

He added that crews arrived quickly and used a nine-metre ladder and four hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters remained at the scene through the evening.

Crime scene specialists and Forensic officers were at the scene yesterday. Roof tiles had been dislodged and a skylight appears to have been damaged.

Neighbour Carol Duggan, who remembered getting along well with Mulcahy, expressed her shock at the news: “I got up at 5am because I couldn’t sleep. It was very bright outside and I went to see what was going on.

"She seemed a nice person, very chatty. I was totally shocked when I found out it was her,” she said.

Dylan Williams, a ward councillor, took to Facebook on Monday to express his condolences.

He wrote: “My thoughts and prayers are with the deceased family and friends. Thirties is truly no age at all.”

Flowers have been left in front of the property tribute to Mulcahy.
