The GB News host says Suella Braverman is not the problem

Patrick Christys has taken aim at Labour’s former Europe minister Denis Macshane over the Government’s handling of the migrant crisis.

In a fiery debate, MacShane claimed that the Rwanda plan, which would see illegal migrants sent to the African country while their claims are processed, is a “joke” and will never get off the ground.

Christys argued that asylum seekers will “end up homeless” due to a lack of available spaces in the UK, and “do-gooder charities” in Calais should let people attempting to cross the Channel know what the reality is in Britain.

In a boisterous debate, Christys pointed out that he and MacShane shared common ground on key issues such as whether British taxpayers should be shelling out to house migrants.

The GB News presenter did however take issue with MacShane’s assertion that “nothing will change” while Suella Braverman remains in her position, arguing that instead “attitudes” much change if Britain is to tackle the crux of the issue.

He commented: “It’s not Braverman that needs to change, it’s our attitude that we need to spend more billions.

“You can keep this exact policy and enact it. You can send people to Rwanda, you could deport them back to their own country, you could get the British taxpayer not having to spend so much on hotels, just with this policy.”

MacShane interjected by branding the Rwanda plan a “job”, citing Israel’s decision to send migrants there in the past to no avail.

“Other countries are fearful, I’d say the Swedes and the Dutch are getting it right”, he said.

“Do you think the people of Sweden think they’re getting it right?” Christys asked.

“No. I don’t think you can get mass people movement right”, the former Labour minister responded.

In a fiery retort, Christys said: “Is that because, dare I say it, Denis MacShane former minister for Europe, you need borders?”

MacShane said it doesn’t matter how many borders are put in place, they will do little to stem the tide of migrants.

It comes after it was revealed that ministers may not be able to divert billions of pounds of overseas aid funding to supporting asylum seekers in the UK by the new “stop the boats” law.

The Independent Commission for Aid Impact (ICAI) said the Illegal Migration Act could “close off the main source of funding” for housing arrivals in the UK.

Nearly £3.7 billion worth of funding was used from the Official Development Assistance (ODA) budget last year, but any further spending could be shut off if Suella Braverman’s plans are imposed.

The OECD, of which the UK is a member, states that aid funding is only usable on “in-donor refugee costs” if individuals are awaiting an asylum decision.

It says that if migrants who arrive by unauthorised means in the UK are deemed illegal and barred from receiving asylum then aid funding would not be eligible to be used on accommodation pending their removal.

Dr Tamsyn Barton, the ICAI’s chief commissioner, said it would mean the Home Office having to meet the costs out of its own budget rather than the Foreign Office’s.

“Our analysis of the aid rules suggests that the Illegal Migration Act, if fully implemented, could close off the main source of funding the Government is using to house asylum seekers,” she said.

Dr Barton said that using the aid budget on hotel costs for asylum seekers rather than supporting people in their home countries is “inequitable as well as inefficient”.
