A man has been jailed for life for the murder and dismemberment of a pensioner after 27 body parts were found scattered across Manchester.

Marcin Majerkiewicz, 42, has been jailed at Manchester Crown Court for life with a minimum term of 34 years for the murder of Stuart Everett, 67, who he dismembered into 27 pieces.

Majerkiewicz was found guilty last week at Manchester Crown Court and was sentenced on Friday.

The Polish man used a hammer-type weapon to murder his 67-year-old housemate before using a hacksaw to cut up his body.

Everett was murdered on the night of March 27 last year - although police were only alerted after they discovered his headless torso wrapped up in cling-film at Kersal Dale nature reserve on April 4.

Marcin could be seen on CCTV carrying a heavy bag and dumping it in the nearby area.

Both men had lived together in Salford.

When police conducted a search at the address, officers uncovered evidence of an attempted clean-up after the killing and dismemberment.

After the torso was first discovered, police launched Operation Harker, and discovered evidence across 15 crime scenes and human remains at five different locations.

Analysis of the skull fragments showed Everett had been subject to a "sustained, severe blunt force physical assault" and was believed to have suffered repeated blows to his head, shattering and fracturing his skull.

Heavy bloodstaining was discovered in Majerkiewicz’ bedroom at the property, which suggested to officers that the victim was attacked and dismembered there.

Before his arrest, Majerkiewicz had assumed use of his finances and his phone, even sending off messages and a card to his family pretending to be his victim.

Trial judge Justice Cavanagh told Majerkiewicz it was a pre-planned murder for gain, to steal Everett's money to pay off spiralling debts.

He said: "You acted in an almost unbelievably cold-blooded and macabre way and showed complete disrespect and contempt for your friend's remains.

"This denied dignity to Stuart Everett even in death and greatly increased the pain suffered by Stuart Everett's family when the murder came to light."
