A bomb squad has descended on a Morrisons supermarket following reports of a "suspicious package" related to an "attempted robbery".

The south Manchester store along Wilbraham Road has now been cordoned off, after reports made to emergency services by a member of the public.


It is believed that the package is associated with an "attempted robbery" at the supermarket's cash machine.

Emergency services, including firefighters, have attended the scene.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "At around 9.20am this morning (Thursday, January 2 2025), officers were called to reports of a suspicious package which was located by a member of the public on Wilbraham Road in Manchester.

"A nearby commercial premises has been evacuated as per standard procedure."

It is understood that the incident was "isolated" and that there was "no threat to the wider community" while officers continue to remain at the scene.

"EOD [Explosive Ordnance Disposal] are attending the scene, and a small cordon is in place," the police force added.

It is understood that a a security guard found the package while inspecting an ATM.

As a result, the nearby tram stop has been affected, with the Bee Network sharing an announcement: "Due to an on-going police incident, Chorlton tram stop will be closed in both directions.

"During this time no trams will be stopping at Chorlton as trams will operate straight through.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Inside the cordon, a black Citroen has been left along the road, although the significance of the vehicle is not known.

A Morrisons spokesperson said: "Following an incident at the Chorlton store, the store is now closed on police instruction."

It is believed that nearby businesses, including ScrewFix and Chorlton Trade Paints, which both use the same car park, are also closed, according to the Manchester Evening News.
