Thick smoke can be seen across Greater Manchester this afternoon following a fire in Salford.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that crews were called to a blaze involving a large pile of tires off Duchy Road.

It is believed that two people were in need of emergency accommodation following the fire, with council staff providing assistance.

No injuries have been reported following the incident.

Three fire engines were dispatched to the scene, and crews worked in the area for approximately one hour and 40 minutes.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "At around 10.10am this morning (Tuesday, April 8), three fire engines from Bolton Central, Farnworth and Leigh fire stations attended a house fire on Hope Street, Leigh.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus arrived quickly and used one hose reel to extinguish the fire.

"Crews were in attendance for roughly one hour and 40 minutes."

A spokesman for The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service reported that firefighters were summoned to a blaze "involving a large pile of tyres".

He added: "At shortly before 1.50pm on Tuesday (April 8) two fire engines from Agecroft, Broughton and Salford fire stations were called to a fire involving a large pile of tyres off Duchy Road, Salford.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using jets to tackle the fire. Crews remain in attendance."

Although the exact location and cause of the fire is not yet known, the city's residents have speculated the source online.
