M40 motorway closed: Lorry 'overturns' in horror collision with drivers stuck in miles of tailbacks

Junction seven near Thame and junction six near Lewknor have shut

A lorry has overturned on the M40, leaving drivers stuck in lengthy queues after the motorway has closed southbound.

Junction seven near Thame and junction six near Lewknor have shut due to a collision involving an overturned heavy goods vehicle.


Emergency services are on the scene.

One lane has since reopened however two remain closed whilst recovery and clear-up works take place.

The latest AA update reads: "Severe delays of 31 minutes and delays increasing on M40 Southbound between J9 A34 (Bicester) and M40 (Oxford / Wheatley). Average speed five mph."

Lanes on junction 8 have also been shut.

An earlier AA update read: "Road closed, stationary traffic and delays due to rolled over vehicle on M40 Southbound from J7 A329 (Thame) to J6 B4009 (Watlington)."

Drivers have been advised to find an alternative route.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

National Highways have recommended that road users should follow the Hollow Triangle diversion symbol on road signs.

They should exit the M40 at J8A and head onto the A40, continue on the A40 southbound to the junction with the B4009, and finally re-join the M40 at J6.

The closing of the southbound lanes has resulted in heavy delays.

Drivers have been advised to find an alternative route

National Highways expects the lanes to clear between 3.00pm to 3.15pm.

They said that normal traffic conditions should resume by 4.00pm.

The Oxford Bus Company posted online: "Due to an incident on the M40, we are currently experiencing delays of up to 30 minutes on our Airline services towards Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Please allow extra time for your journey today."

The Oxford Tube, another coach company, said: "Due to an accident at J7 of the M40 we are currently on diversion via the A40 London bound. We are servicing the stop at the Mercure Lambert Arms and not our usual stop at Lewknor. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
