An off-duty police officer has been stabbed with a "large machete" by two men on a moped following a robbery.
The officer, from the Metropolitan Police, intervened when he saw two individuals trying to steal the vehicle outside a shopping centre in Bedfordshire.
Emergency services rushed to the scene at Luton Point in George Street around 1.10pm on Saturday.
The offenders, who are described as being in their mid-20s, stabbed the man with a large blade before fleeing the scene - one on their own moped and the other on the stolen one.
The Met officer was then rushed to hospital, where is currently receiving treatment for his wounds.
His injuries are thought not to be life-threatening.
A manhunt has been launched for the two suspects, with the police asking anyone with information to reach out.
One of the suspects was wearing a dark-coloured jacket and grey and white tracksuit bottoms, whilst the other wore a black jacket and trousers.
