Merseyside police are on the scene

The Museum of Liverpool has been evacuated over a “security risk”.

Police have erected a cordon around the building after ordering civilians inside to leave.

Pictures from the scene show a bomb disposal vehicle parked outside the centre.

Merseyside police said the evacuation came after a “suspicious item” was found inside the tourist attraction.

A spokesperson for the force said a World War 2 device was found inside but that it posed no danger to the public.

They said: “We can confirm emergency services were called to the Museum of Liverpool at the Pier Head at about 10.50am this morning after concerns were raised about a suspicious item found inside the building.

“On further examination, the item was found to be an old WW2 training device, which was deemed safe and posed no risk to the public.

“The museum, which was temporarily closed as a precaution, has reopened.

“We would like to thank members of the public for their patience whilst the incident was dealt with by our officers.

“Merseyside Police responds immediately to any incidents of concern for safety and the safety of residents and visitors in our region is paramount.”

Liverpool is currently hosting the Labour Party conference, with the ACC centre situated about 10 minutes away from the museum.

However, fringe events for the conference are being held near the museum.

Outside the police cordon, an event is reported to have continued despite the police presence.

Zoe Billingham, director of think tank the Institute for Public Policy Research, was set to chair the event on Rebooting levelling up for the next election.

She featured MPs Paula Barker and Justin Madders, as well as Steve Rotheram, metro mayor of Liverpool City region and others.

Billingham tweeted: “Levelling up continues outside - Museum of Liverpool temporarily evacuated but ⁦@zoe_billingham⁩ and audience stay with it on the dock... Updates to follow.”
