Two people have been arrested after campaign group Just Stop Oil disrupted a West End Shakespeare performance starring Sigourney Weaver.

Two protesters took to the stage on Monday at the Theatre Royal during a production of The Tempest carrying a sign reading "over 1.5 degrees is a global shipwreck".

This was apparently a nod to the plot of Shakespeare's Tempest, which features a ship sinking.

The 42-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man set off a confetti cannon, announcing: "We’ll have to stop the show ladies and gentlemen, sorry", causing boos and cheers to erupt from the crowd.

One member of the audience was heard yelling "f**k off" at the pair.

Weaver, 75, who had been sitting was escorted off the stage as the pair were ushered away.

Their sign refers to attempts to limit global warming to 1.5C to reduce the impact of climate change.

2024 was the warmest year on record globally and the first full one when the average temperature exceeded 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.

One protester said: "I am scared for my children, I can't sleepwalk them into a future of food shortages, life-threatening storms and wars for resources."

"Years of writing to MPs, going on marches…hasn't seen the urgent change needed...1.5 degrees is a global shipwreck we can't ignore."

The Metropolitan Police said that officers had arrived at the venue after the campaigners left, however two people were arrested on Tuesday.

A 42-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man were detained on suspicion of aggravated trespass after attending a central London police station.

In recent years, the campaign group has targeted numerous other events and venues including the Chelsea Flower Show, the Proms, Stonehenge and the National Gallery.

Earlier this month, two women were arrested after spray-painting Charles Darwin's grave inside Westminster Abbey.

The words "1.5 is dead" were written in orange on the biologist’s grave, referring to attempts to limit global warming to 1.5C and reduce the impact of climate change.
